Idea

In early 2020, our organization embarked on a mission to transform our customer's business intelligence capabilities. The initial goal was to develop a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) focused on a single BI application that could efficiently consume data from a single source. However, the ambition was far-reaching - to create a comprehensive, cloud-native data platform that would empower various departments and applications while ensuring data security, compliance, and user-friendliness.

The Great Challenge

The challenges were formidable. We needed to evolve from a rudimentary MVP to a fully-fledged AWS-based data platform sourcing from five diverse data sources, including REST APIs, AWS RDS services from another account, Oracle Databases, currency rate feeds from ECB, and manual user uploads. The platform had to serve the analytical needs of not just our internal teams but also over 600 external users.

Achieving column and row-based security, complying with GDPR regulations, delivering applications in multiple languages, and ensuring multicurrency support were all critical. Additionally, the platform had to enable users to tailor their analyses, and power users should be able to build their applications using the provided model.

Our Contribution

Our solution was an extensive, cloud-native data platform built on AWS infrastructure. It ingested data from five different sources, consolidated it, and made it available to five distinct departments and twelve BI applications. The platform was designed with data security and GDPR compliance in mind, providing tailored solutions for column and row-based security layers.
